substrate
In chemistry, a substrate is typically the chemical species being observed in a chemical reaction, which reacts with a reagent to generate a product. It can also refer to a surface on which other chemical reactions are performed, or play a supporting role in a variety of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. In synthetic and organic chemistry, the substrate is the chemical of interest that is being modified. In biochemistry, an enzyme substrate is the material upon which an enzyme acts. When referring to Le Chatelier's principle, the substrate is the reagent whose concentration is changed. The term substrate is highly context-dependent.
hi all,
So from my notes plaster can only take 20kg per m2 (including adhesive/grout).
I’m just about to tile a wet room and my issue is this:
I’ve had the room skimmed (it’s mostly a stud wall room with plasterboards, part of one wall is block). This same part block/ part stud wall had to be...
Hi.
The walls in my ensuite are coming along well...
Just thinking about the floor now.
The original tiled floor was tiled over thin sheets of plywood. The ply was on top of T&G chipboard.
Is it ok to tile on plywood? I seem to be coming across articles or posts that suggest not.

Hi - I'd be grateful for advice. I'm doing a shower area due to a leak and tile failure. One of the walls is made of plasterboard which has gone rotten, so I'm in the process of ripping it out. It seems that wall is comprised of 3 layers of plasterboard (one of which I'm removing) and I can't...

Hey guys
Was wondering if anyone could give me some advice re a floor tiling job I have coming up?
The area is approx. 20-25m2 and will be using 600x300 porcelains.
The floor is 2/3rds 20mm floorboards and 1/3 concrete as it is a kitchen and dining room that has had a dividing wall taken down...
I'm planning to use 22mm limestone on a multi layered substrate hallway; joists, ply between joists (fixed to batten), sellotex between joists, underfloor wet heating, screed over top between joists. Is ditramatt the best option with 22mm thick tiles?
hi guys, went to look at a floor today, 35m2 of chevron planks. Great I thought... Can't wait.... Oh hold on a minute..... Two different substrates! Suspended floor on one half and screed other half! The joint is staggered aswell! Spoke to builder who just wants to put 20mm thick polystyrene...

Hello all,

Just been round to a job where the plumber has installed a shower tray and siliconed up the edges against the backerboard (Marmox type - unsure of make) - all fine, except he has smeared it into a thin layer approx. 30mm up all the way around.
Planning to tank the shower using Mapegum etc...
Hello,
I am looking for a bit of advice regarding patches of loose concrete substrate on a floor I am looking to tile. I have included some pictures to show the general state of the substrate whilst also showing particular areas of concern.
I have recently lifted the downstairs laminate...
Got a small walk in shower to rip out and re tile and was curious to know if there would be advantages to using a cement hardie type board instead of moisture resistant plaster board? I'm assuming both would require tanking, weight/type of tiles to be used currently unknown.

New to the site, but been lurking for a while and I'm after a bit of advice about timber floors. I'm in the process of converting my bathroom into a wetroom. It's a first floor bathroom with a timber floor, approx 3m x 1.7m with joists span the shorter distance. My house is a bit old and...

Hi. I'm tiling the four walls in my bathroom.
It was previously tiled half way up and where I removed those, the old plaster(?) underneath was like soft pumice, so I hacked it off and re plastered, primed with SBR and tiled the lower half of the room using Mapei cement based adhesive.
The top...

Hello all,
I seem to be in a dilemma with the tiler and tiling my bathroom. First of all, things to bear in mind are that the walls are slightly damp and I have gone for porcelain tiles. The walls have been treated with a damp proof course but I have been advised any previous damp may remain...
