What a fantastic post Oli.
I'm currently in that phase that you mentioned, where you want to ask questions but feel embarrassed to do so incase you sound an idiot. I have however found the answer to two of them by reading this post.

Which trowel......
Different trowel's for different scenario's, as a guide........
Mosaics...........................4mm Notch
Kitchen Walls....................6mm Notch
Good Bathroom Walls......... 8mm Notch
Bad Bathroom Walls...........10mm Notch
Good Floors.....................10mm Notch
Reasonable Floors.............12mm Notch
Large Format Tiles............12mm Notch
Rough Floors....................13mm Notch
Dry Wall Area's................Notched Trowel
Wet Wall Area's...............Thin Solid Bed Trowel
Floors / External Area's.....Thick Solid Bed Trowel
Tiles over 300 x 300.........Large Format Trowel
Mosaics upto 100 x 100....4mm Mosaic Trowel
Hey Oli, great thread btw m8,
so do you use the 10mm notch on bad bathroom walls instead of having to make good or get a plasterer in to make good?
Can see me asking lots of questions as im reading through this lot so bare with me, lol.

Good thread mate but what about including in your adhesives section where and when and with what and on what adhesive should be used then this really would be a tile bible

Oli, thank you very much for putting the effort in to get this down on the PC. Seeing this post, I've just literally started my own bible. Superb advice which will come in well handy. To think I walked out of my course thinking "No trouble" and two years down the line thinking "Every job's Trouble!":lol:
