If the floor is perfectly flat, the smallest trowel I would use is 10mm notch, I would also back butter the tile. You need to get as near as possible to 100% coverage of adhesive on the back of the tile to insure it is properly fixed. If you lift a tile that you have fixed and you can still see the adhesive notches, then you haven't got sufficient adhesive coverage, so you will need to use a larger notch trowel.

The floor does run out. Shall I use a 20mm to be safe? Also will a u shaped trowel help with coverage?
Thanks

A 20mm half moon trowel, may work but as I said you will need to check some of the tiles once you have fixed them for coverage.
