Hello,

I assumed I could tile onto marine plywood and my tiles fell off ... I'm tiling on a wall behind a wall-hung toilet using 25x50cm tiles.

I scraped off as much adhesive as I could, but there is still a fair bit stuck fast to the plywood.

I now know that I need to prime the ply, but can I prime over the bits of remining adhesive? Or do I need to take the time to chisel / sand it all off?

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks

Remove the ply and re-clad your framework with 12mm hardibacker- then tile it.
If your ply was 18 mm and you’ve cut some wall hung elements to suit that thickness- then: construct the framework with 12mm hardie and then overboard with 6mm hardie to make up the thickness. (Or put 6m ply underneath the 12mm hardie)

Thanks for your reply :) Sounds like a good plan.

Is that because the tile adhesive that’s stuck directly on the ply wont be secure enough going forward (even though it’s set now!)?

No , it’s because you shouldn’t really tile onto ply these days as it’s all rubbish!!
In any case if us much better to tile onto cement board, and 12mm is extremely stiff and great for structural boxing.
