I have a few questions

How thick are the tiles?
What is the condition of the steps?
What size area is it?
Were the old tiles in tact ?
You will need extremely good flat surface to use tiles that size

Oh so your not using tiles that are 1m x 1m in size ?

Strip all the tiles off and clean it up, see what you have and post a photo if your not sure
