Hi, I’m looking for advice/opinion on the use of porcelain tiles cut to a 45 degree mitre for the edge of some steps.

Having spoke to a relative who has had some experience in this area he suggested that given the heavy footfall traffic on stairs that porcelain tiles may chip on the edges.

Has anyone had this issue or would not recommend the use of tiles cut like this, would a thicker porcelain make a difference?

Thanks.

With very light use, in a bathroom for instance should be fine but other then that, forget it. Won't last.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Mitred treads and risers are a very difficult thing to do to make them robust enough for day to day use.
Unfortunately thicker tiles won’t help either, they’re still mitred down to the leading edge, they would help in some ways but primarily the leading edge would be generally the same thickness after mitring no matter how thick they are.
The leading edge would need to be resin filled and that also is a time consuming and can be a difficult task.
An option I would consider would be to use
Schluters Finec mitre trim.
comes in many finishes and colours and suits a wide variety of tile thicknesses, from 3.5mm to 12mm.
You would still achieve the mitred step look, but the mitring is much easier because you don’t have to be pun point accurate and it allows you to have a thicker leading edge, thus reducing the chance of broken edges.
And you’re left with a metal trim approx 2-3mm wide protecting the step edge.
