Hello From new member needing advice - Tile Advice

diy tiler in need of advice from day to day professionals. I have tiled walls and floors over the years with good results and no comebacks. I have now hit a minefield of advice from many forums. I am tiling 45ms
Of ceramic tile (150mm x 600mm) on to a concrete floor which was previously tiled with Marley tiles. There is a thin layer of bitumen adhesive remaining. There lies my problem! Many pros have said remove as much as I can, prime with Bal Sbr bond and should be fine?
Many have said do not tile over primed bitumen it must be removed?
The floors are reasonably level and in my opinion do not need SLC. In the past I have always used 5:1 ratio pva and laid ties when still tacky. I have never tiled over adhesive stained concrete and when I searched for advice my mind couldn't cope!My main concern is the chance of asbestos in the tiles/adhesive so scraping, sanding or grinding it off would be hazardous? Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

The bitumen that's remaining on the floor does contain a small amount of aspestos, I work for a housing trust and we slc to encapsulate the remaining bitumen, the floor is primed with green primer (can't remember name at present) and slc is Bostick and it's expensive from Travis.
Don't use pva is the devils creation but just go with a primer with the slc you purchase, most will use sbr or an acrylic.
The old Marley tiles contain aspestos as well and our lot uses the right people to remove them.

Yes job is for me. Have recently read about not using PVA but I took advice from a so called pro and have used it on every job I've done!, now I'm up against conflicting advice hence coming on to this site.

Hello. All Marley tiles have been removed leaving behind a thin film of bitumen adhesive. The floor does not need SLC.
Looking for suitable primer or Slurry coat? Trying to get the most common used with good results by you pros.
Ps I removed tiles and broke them up not knowing they contain asbestos!! Have been told the adhesive residue also contains asbestos so don't want to disturb it anymore.

As above. Mechanical grip primer which rocatex, Mapei, tilemaster, Ardex and others do or make a slurry coat with sbr and rapid adhesive. Alternatively you could use arditex na but if the floor is good a waste of money

For example if using tilemaster I would use tilemaster prime grip +.
Or mapei and use eco prim grip

Hi. I am using Larsen. On pack says to use acrylic primer. Perhaps I should ring their tech guys. Thanks for reply

Hi Spud 22, Marley tiles were laid in ATA (a bitumen based adhesive) and were known as thermoplastics meaning they had be heated prior to laying, you might have noticed they were very brittle when you removed them, they did contain asbestos. As far as priming the residue I agree with all above I would prefare Mapei and eco prim grip. Good luck.

Thanks Phil, I have already purchased 10 bags of Larsen adhesive so will probably use their mechanical grip. Downside it is £40 for 5ltrs. Do you think using Mapei Eco grip with Larsen adhesive would cause a problem?

Personally I don't have a problem with different primers and adhesives . Once it's dried its dried . There is a lot of rubbish spoken about use all our products and get a guarantee. If it fails its failed , to my mind unless they can prove there is a reaction between adhesive and primer I don't see they have a way out , but on a side note even if you use all the same product they will usually find a way out . Just to note though this is my own personal view and not upheld by many on tilers forum but over the years I have used many different primers with many different adhesives and i have yet to have something let go .
