anyone done this with success.
I have fixed loads of stone on scalpuings with min 40mm solid sand cement bed and flex adhesive on back of tile.
any reason why this would not work with porcelain.

60 mm is recommended unbonded bed depth Jonny as long as the scalping so were vibrated with a wacker plate I can't see a problem it's almost the same way the Romans done it

I'd consider 75mm scalpings with a 75mm sand/cement screed incorporating chicken wire. Then fixing with a green screed adhesive suitable for outside.
