I went to look at a small domestic floor job this morning and have a query over the floor prep.

On lifting the existing cushioned vinyl flooring there is a 0.5mm film of black sticky residue on the concrete floor. Is this likely to be the adhesive that was laid to fix the vinyl. The vinyl is about 5yr old.
What would the likely floor prep be?.......Arditex NA????

You got any pics. It could be bitumen but could be a DPM...

Hi Ajax. Unfortunately no pics. My first reaction would be to say no it isn't a DPM.... it can be scraped away with a fingernail? ???

only my 3rd post I know and putting myself out on a limb as no pics but think you've answered your own question there, if its a small domestic, on concrete and defo not a dpm and can be scrapped away with a finger nail, for the time it would take would be worth scraping a way with a floor scraper, sbr then maybe a thin skim of self lever then good to tile...imo

If its still soft and tacky, it is most likely to be the vinyl adhesive residue. Some of these vinyl adhesives used years ago were/are bitumen based. DPM used as a surface DPM should be Epoxy based and therefore if it was a DPM it would be hard/set.

My advice, remove as much of the adhesive residue as possible. If you manage to remove a good percentage of the residue, prime with a slurry mix primer and then apply adhesive or leveller as required.

If you are not able to remove the residue, level with Arditex NA as suggested above. It is the best leveller that i know of for smoothing over adhesive residue's.

Thanks for all of the advice, plenty food for thought.
When slurry coats are referred to,is that in.... 1:1 SBR/cement or SBR/Tile adhesive?

It depends on whose product you use. Our Slurry Coat is the Primeplus (SBR) primer diluted 1:1 with water and then mixed with approximately 30% by weight of adhesive or leveller to form a gritty primer / slurry. It works very well on the most difficult od surfaces.
