As a new member , what guidelines does everyone refer to when preparing substrates and walls for tiling.
There appears to be many different opinions regarding when to use cement boards or schluter .
What height difference would necessitate a floor levelling compound vs just flattening with adhesive

Thanks Plan Tec Tiling. If I can ask one specific question on this subject.
When faced with a plywood floor on top of tongue and groove , would you stick tile directly on this or remove and replace with cement board

Either overboard it with cement/insulation board or use a decoupling memebrane such as Ditra 25 or BAL rapid mat etc. Seeing how your asking these questions then it’s important to stress that the floor must be completely deflection free.

THANKS lee mac.
Just to be sure, in your first suggestion the cement board can go on top of the ply ?
Would you put flexi adhesive down or just screw it down ?
In the second example would you use flexi adhesive on the mats ?

That should help me move forward with this

When over boarding, adhesive would always be used, whether it’d be bagged or tubed from the likes of NMP or Hardys new foam. Idea being that it takes the unevenness out of the substrate.
And on a timber floor (no matter what form it may take) it would be mechanically fixed also, along with joints taped.

The requirements for adhesive from manufacturers is normally just a Non flexible adhesive, although most members seem to use an S1.
