Hi,

Can I tile directly onto this? I have taken off the previous tiles and (most) of the adhesive. Can I tile onto this wall? I have read that you should not using pva under any circumstances, but the wall does feel a bit dusty.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

B

As long as what is left is solid yes you can, although it might make your life easier to start with a flat surface. I’d also be reluctant to tile over paint.

Don’t use pva, use a proper tiling primer such as bal apd or sbr as per instructions on the tub.

Lastly think about the weight of the tile/adhesive/grout. Plaster holds upto 20kg per m2.

I would be concerned about those loose blocks firstly. And no you cannot tile directly to a backing coat. It requires skimming or re-boarding first.
Get those loose thermalites sorted first though. Dry lining could be the answer.

As Dave says.

Initially looked like sand and cement backing coat to me.
