From a technical standpoint, the hardibacker is incorrectly installed, Hardibacker require a minimum of 12 screws per complete board and all joints to be taped with their skrim and then feathered over with tile adhesive prior to Tiling.
He appears to have done neither.
So you have grounds to condemn the floor.
The down side to that is that you’re legally obliged to offer him the opportunity to rectify it before dismissing him.
If use that as part of your decision, make sure you make the offer to rectify in writing attaching

This is not to say it will fail, however Hardibacker will not offer any warranty.

If you’re wanting to be in your eyes ‘fair’ and want to pay him for what he has done,
Then it could easily be argued that the cost of replacing the Hardibacker and tiles, together with the time involved, would equal any forthcoming payment.

That would leave you with compensation for the rip out.

If you do make him an offer to never darken your door again, make sure you do it in writing, along with your reasons, together with the Hardibacker installation guide AND the opportunity to correct it.

There is nothing there that can’t be rescued, if you have lost faith in your tiler which by the way he has conducted himself so far you have every right to then maybe time to get another tiler in
Thank you, going to contact a few today and see if I can get some people out to quote on finishing the work off. Dreading the conversation with the existing tiler

Thank you for the advice, I’m going to give him a call and just try and talk things through like you say give him an opportunity to rectify any issues. As well as getting some others to hopefully come quote this weekend see how much they would charge to complete and fix it if he’s not willing to.

The tile is over the hardie backer board this part won’t be stood on as it’s at side of where toilet is going but will the below where the boards don’t meet the door bar need fixing sorry I’m a complete novice

Looks to be 6 screws in that board and no fibre tape, I double fibre tape and put 40 odd screws in and still get problems (Cough BCT).

I should have been more constructive from the start, for that I apologise. It’s certainly not technically right, but I dare say it’s better prep than what a lot of people do with ply wood etc. It is strange that some one spends the money on backerboads then doesn’t fit them right. I think it’s his manner and attitude that’s really got to you here, I can’t see that getting any better when you throw a bit of criticism in the mix..

The fact you haven’t paid him anything helps your situation.
Tell him you have been/going to the citizens advice bureau, have/will be getting a contractor who you can work with and rely on and remind him you are the customer. As others any materials he’s used will account for the day he’s spent messing up - unless he wants you to take the legal action route.
Oh and don’t forget to mention that you’ve asked your brother ( who works for the Tax Office) for advice.

My whole family will work at the tax office :tearsofjoy: if that helps motivate him to fix it. Thank you for your responses

may i asky why are you doing it backwards?

getting the floor tiled and then x amount of days later getting the walls skimmed / plastered

the floors going to end up in a mess unless really covered etc then there's still a possibility of damage

really it should go

strip out (fully),
first fix elecs and any chased in plumbing (if boxing in this isnt needed),
plaster / skimmed,
first/second fix plumbing eg bath installed etc,
tiled,
second fix plumbing and elecs,
final snagging eg sealing etc.

^^^^ as a rough guide

The new bath is in and everything else due to be fitted back next weds after the plasterer coming on Tues.
The reason the plastering is being done while floor tiles are being fitted is because it’s the soonest I could get this particular person out he’s fully booked. He did some work at my mums house very clean tidy and good job and great reviews in general. I asked if I would need to delay floor tiling he said no he tapes everything off and to be fair the floor was meant to be finished so good to walk on etc but yes I would of rather it was more organised
