Morning

Just stripped a bathroom wall and there is a pink surface underneath which is like paint? However it does not just scrape off so I am wondering if I can tile to this or is there something I can apply first to the surface?

This is a 1920's house and has not been touched since that date to my knowledge.

Thanks in advance!

Could be a pink French polished plaster! Popular in the '70's (1970's).
Picture makes it in good condition for 1920's.

Some will say remove it whatever it takes but, scrape it well and see if it comes off, also try wetting it then scraping. I have a feeling it won't come off. If that's the case, best you could do would be prime it with prime + grip or similar then tile it

Thanks yes steam off wallpaper and tried to scrape this at the same time but most of it is impossible to remove.

Any recommendation on the best prime + grip to use?

What size tiles are you using? The other wall is lath and plaster so you'd need to check its sound. Otherwise get back to the stud work and reboard. Look up the weight allowances for wall tiling.
