Please could someone advise if it’s common practise or acceptable for the tile joins not to meet as shown in the image attached?

As for the op’s question the answer is no not acceptable to not have the joints aligned if same tile and size.

Looks way over the top. I’m sure it’s acceptable for a commercial staircase or some toilets in a restaurant but not in someone’s bathroom.

It depends on the gap left between the tiles. If its a big one like we have seen before then it may need a bead that wide.
