Discuss Trim or silicone on tile upstands in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

Hello All

For good or bad (probably bad as its not a common choice) we're planning to tile around the top of the kitchen worktop. Worktop is dead level so plan to leave a 2 or 3 mm expansion gap and silicone that.

The issue is the top of the tiled upstand. The tiles are black ceramic with raw terracota colour visible at the sides. I hadn't given it much though until now and I know its partly/mostly a aesthetic question but I still appreciate your thoughts as you probably see a lot of kitchens. Should I use aluminium tile trim or just silicone/caulk over the top?

If trim is the way to go would 10mm be ok for 9mm tiles ? The tiles are small at 100x300mm

I'm not a massive fan of aluminium trims myself as I feel it often detracts from the look of the tile and all you end up seeing is trim. Personally I would caulk it, with a paintable caulk so you can then simply paint the caulk in with the rest of the wall and get a seamless finish between wall and tile.
