Hi,

I have just had 40m3 of travartine tiles laid in opus pattern in my kitchen. The tiler was arranged by my kitchen fitter. Can somebody please give me some advice on sealing and what is the norm. The tiles were sealed individually before they were laid with 1 coat of lithofin impregnator. How many coats are recommended and should they be recoated again along with the grout?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on what you guys do normally.

At least 2 coats is the norm, maybe more depending on the porosity. 3 or 4 thin coats are better than 1 or 2 thick coats. So yes, apply another 2 coats of Lithofin.

Thanks for both of your replies, do you seal the grout as well, its BAL jasmin grout

Yes you do. I use a small sponge roller to apply, the kind that comes cheap with a small roller tray. Don't roll too vigorously as the sealer could foam up. Use a kitchen towel to wipe up any not soaking in. It's quite fumey so keep the windows open.

Most tilers will know from handling the tiles as to how much seal to use .travertine is very varied in grades and finishes .I usually seal it until water when wiped over tiles sits on top and usually bobbles .also the lithothin doesn't really enhance the colour of the tiles much .if you want them darker get a colour enhancing sealant
