Howard weather the very knowledgeable tilers on here give the public/diyers help or not their still gony attempt to do the tiling themselves. So the works not gony come our way anyway,so it's nice to be nice and give a little advice.

Without the public their wouldn't be a forum

no sorry mate when they make a mess of there tiling they will or next time get a good tiler in

Without the tilers their wouldn't be a forum (shakespeare) lol

would you deny somebody a nice bathroom just because maybe they can't afford to get a tiler in? If public want to have a go themselves, wether forum's here or not they'll have a bash, hopefully they'll discover forum first and be better informed as to what is involved.I'll bet some public members have been on here looking for advice and then thought "whoa, I think I'd better get a pro in after all!"

i even get cheeky gits phoning for advice,do i tell them to bugger off,no i help them as much as i can,ok maybe i go overboard on the method and preperation, but i find i finish up getting to do at least half the jobs as they become confused and even scared of doing the job themselves, and those that do it themselves finish up ringing back next time they do a tiling job because the job they did themselves looks crap.
people ring and ask if i can cut them some tiles because they cant cut them properly,i also do this for them often for next to nothing, its just another form of advertising, and that customer trusts you more than any other as you have helped them out with no apparent advantage to me.

This forums here to help, be it other tilers needing some tips, or total novice DIY'ers that need step by step instructions.
Now, wether they still end up making a right hash or not... well that's what happens, but at least we have been here to help as much as one can from an online forum.

and not forgetting the fact that many tilers on here have actually gained work through this forum, so it works both ways :sifone:

hi everybody

i am going to price a job next week the lady has told me she wants me to put new tiles on top of the old ones is their any downfalls to this or could anyone give me any other advice

cheers

Howard

that was Howards 2nd thread on TF

You have done a tiling course, advertise as a professional tiler yet you had to ask for advise on tiling onto tiles, was this not a topic during your course? As far as i am concerned thats a question a D.I.Yer would ask.
There would be no difference in me giving you advice or a D.I.Yer except that you may understand more fully what i was explaining to you.We all have to start somewhere and who knows, some of these D.I Yers might do 1 job in their house and then decide to take a tiling course, same as loads of people have done.

I agree with dave and medlar here howard,i'm course trained but i certainly don't consider myself a professional tiler but i'm certainly above the diy market. Giving someone from diy advice can also make them realise that the job in hand is out of thier abilty and will therefore consult a tiler to do the job.

thats a very valid point you made there Paul mate

This thread imo is a sign of the times i.e work is hard to come by etc and people are trying to look after themselves and there family etc,but i cannot disagree more with Howard on this one,my reasons being that this forum has not only helped myself and if everyone is honest we have all had some form of help on here whether it be tiling related from Dave,Accounts by Grumpy,Computers/internet from Dan and of course how to attract the opposite sex by Wivers.Sometimes we say things in haste and post on here then realise that maybe just maybe we should have thought twice before we pressed that return button.I agree with what has been said about giving informal advice to the public on this forum regarding specialist subjects, weight ratios etc(OR ANYTHING TILING RELATED) and would not condone anyone for giving newbies or general public(new members)advice. Therefore im sorry Howard but feel your comments are injust m8.

Bri.

This question comes up time and time again on a number of trade forums.

1) Fact - people look to take on new challenges, it's what makes us human.
2) Fact - the more astute amongst us will tread carefully in areas that we are unfamiliar with
3) Fact - people like to help. Most people derive pleasure from helping others, I know that I do. I am very lucky to have found this forum as there are like minded people here with far more experience in this area than me.
4) Fact - people who are likely to have a go themselves will do so anyway, but they will be better informed after visiting this forum. This forum may either confirm to them that they are capable of it, or it may tell them why they are not, hence a tiler somewhere will get the job they wouldn't have anyway.
5) Fact - many people come here with technical questions about adhesive types etc if they are not happy with what their tiler is doing. This forum can either put their minds at rest or suggest some questions they can put to their tiler. This is really important! Many a time I have seen a thread here where the 'tiler' is not approaching th job properly
6) Fact - there are idiots in the retail tile industry who feed the customer several misconceptions on a daily basis. This misinformation only serves to damage the industry beyond repair. Perhaps the most significant areas are labour costs and technical issues. This forum plays a key role in asserting the correct industry view via several time honoured representatives of that industry.
7) Fact - you get what you pay for. This forum helps to redress the balance between poor DIY shed tiles and decent Tiles from the likes of CTD etc. Sometimes the DIY Shed tiles are just as expensive as the decent tiles but a fraction of the quality. I don't think that it's right that anyone should be sold 3rd rate goods at top prices in ANY economic climate, it's just not right, and it's time that the DIY sheds stopped ripping off the general public with their 3rd rate goods and service - B&Q you are involved so listen up!
8) Fact - When people come onto this forum for the first time including you Howard, no one knew whether you were a DIYer or a tradesman starting out. Those that helped you took you for who you said you were. By your logic maybe they should have asked for proof that you were trading before they helped you.
9) Fact - you were helped out, you accepted the help, so it's only right that others should receive the sme help. Today's DIYer could be tomorrow's tiler, or tomorrow's customer.
10) Fact - what comes around goes around
11) Fact - I've gone on long enough lol!

Howard, everybody has to start somewhere... most tilers don't leave school fully trained with a bagful of experience.

I am a novice in the respect that I am untrained and have done a limited amount of tiling.

Could I raise a reciprocal of your point Howard - As I am an untrained gardener, does this mean my planting, cultivating, landscaping and garden development is not as good as a professional?

I've gone on loads of different forums for help and advice on different things,

im a member of afew car forums which allow me to modify and do minor repairs etc on my car - Should i go to a mechanic,

a member of a bodybuilding forum for help and advice on gym stuff - should i go to a personal trainer,

not to mention plumbing, electrics etc, if i can do a job myself i want to, and if i can save money i want to, thats what internet forums are all about, sharing knowledge and advice with other people.

I've gained loads of knowledge from every forum im on and happilly share knowledge i have with others for that very reason. I dont think forums would be much use if people wouldnt share advice, and im sure that 99% of this forums members feel exactly the same way.
