But then you most probably have to redecorate, no chance you can take arcs off on most jobs

Archatrave yes, but i don't understand the need to cut the actual door frame..

Architrave is the moulded wood strip fitted after the casing/frame goes in and is separate to the frame.. Have you got a multi tool?
