I think I've managed to create a layout whereby all of my cut tiles are square cutouts. It's possible when I do a dry layout that I'll prefer a different configuration.

One factor will be whether I can get away with a U-shaped cutout or not?

I have 2 pillars protruding from opposite walls supporting an RSJ. I initially wanted to do a u-shaped cutout around them so that a tile lay across the gap between pillars - as this gap has a row of engineering bricks running between it across the floor. It seemed preferable to have that row in the middle of a tile rather than at the end. But then I decided provided the adhesive bonds it's irrelevant and a square cutout is simpler. If I could achieve a u-shaped cutout I'd have a choice to consider.

The tiles are 59x59 porcelain and either 9mm or 12mm thick.

U shape cut outs are not a problem as a rule.
Draw your intended cut on the tile and use a 10mm tile drill to bore holes in the corners of your U shape first, this will eliviate stress on the tile before and after fitting.
Once holes are drilled, use your grinder to finish the cut. Do not overrun your drill holes, they become ineffective if you do.
