Hi all,

I'm refitting my bathroom as a (slow) DIY job at the moment, but am probably going to get a tiler to do the tiling work. I know all the right questions to ask them now!

I am plasterboarding the walls, which should take the weight of the 10mm travertine + cement based adhesive I have planned, but I was going to use a paint on tanking 'solution'. It seems however that most prefer membranes here?

The question I have is does using a membrane affect the weight-bearing capacity of plasterboard as I am close to the 32kg/m2 limit?

Thanks in advance,

David Goodier

Tanking membranes give no additional strength or weaken a substrate,,,what ever the substrate is weight capacity wise is.. it's the same with membranes...

Make sure you use a rapid setting cement based adhesive..

If I do decide to take the tiling on myself, wouldn't I be better off without rapid setting (time no problem) or is there an advantage I don't realise? Wouldn't a slower setting time allow me to correct the likely **** ups?!!:huh2:

You could use a slow setting rapidset m8.
MAPEI products have a good open time and i would recommend them.

Slow set can be used be you must wait longer before tiling can commnece....i use rapid set then you can tile on quicker.....

It is easy to apply..just like wallpapering...
