Got a small walk in shower to rip out and re tile and was curious to know if there would be advantages to using a cement hardie type board instead of moisture resistant plaster board? I'm assuming both would require tanking, weight/type of tiles to be used currently unknown.

Why not use a pre-fab lightweight waterproof board like Wedi, Schluter Board or Marmox, no tanking (only edge sealing) and just as strong. Ok, slightly more expensive, but add on time and cost of tanking and probs not much in it??

Is aqua panel the same thing, what do u you seal the edges with silicone?

No, aquapanel isn't the same, it is water resistant not waterproof like wedi, schluter & Marmox.

Edges / joints need to be sealed with tanking waterproof tape or sealant (not silicone!)
