Hi all,

New member to the forum, although I must to confess to being a 'lurker' for quite some time.

A bit about me - I have been a full-time 'tradey' for a number of years now. My primary trade is plastering and this is probably what I spend most of my time doing. Recently I have been carrying out more full-scale renovations, etc. (whole houses) with the help of some friends.

I like plastering and I think I'm good at it but I'm getting a bit tired of doing it every day. I am looking to move to doing bathrooms. I have plumbers, electrician, etc I can use already.

As well as plastering I do have some other skills in other trades like carpentry, etc. but I like to think I know my limits and always try to respect other trades and the time/experience required to truly master something.

I have some knowledge on tiling. I have always taken an interest in it and am always studying other people's work when I'm at customer's houses. I've also spent a lot of time trawling around this forum.

What I don't have is the experience, and I know this is really the important bit. I have done a couple of small splashbacks and tiled some bits of boxing, etc but that is all.

My question is this - given all the info above, is it reasonable to expect that after putting myself through a short tiling course for practice I might expect to be tiling your average bathroom with a decent finish? I would be going over my own beautifully flat plastered walls at least!

I know I wouldn't have anywhere near the speed of a time-spent pro or the experience to deal with complicated patterns or specialist tiles but is this still naive/offensive to all you professionals out there?

I'm very willing for someone to put me in my place!

Welcome, go for it, your already skilled in one trowel trade, so your already have a sound base and skills. As you say it’s all about gaining experience and knowledge that counts. Enjoy and be as good as you can be.

Welcome to the forum! Are you on the plasterers forum Danny owns? I heard that's quite a good forum.

Hi and welcome, yes a lot to learn.
My first tip..... Don't plaster where you intend to tile, please, there really is no need. If you must, leave it 3 weeks to fully dry and don't plaster straight onto green board.

i started off plastering then realised there was more money in tiling and less tiring.
got paid the same at end of the week but did about the 10 th of the work
never looked back and still do a bit of plastering. did some last week for a guy as was waiting for the tiles to set
