Hi all,

I have done a few smaller tiling jobs previously, and I'm about to tackle our kitchen floor and
and could do with some advice.

The floor area is 7.6M x 4.7M and the tiles I am using are 600mm x 600mm x 10mm porcelain. The floor is concrete, no underfloor heating and I plan to leave an 8mm approx gap around the perimeter under the skirting boards. Planning to use theRaimondi RLS Levelling System and the tile spacers I got are 1.5mm.


I have read a lot online about expansion joints, tile fields etc. and I'm more confused than ever at this stage; from what I can figure out as the ratio of the shortest to the longest distances in my case exceeds the 1:1.5 rule as it is about 1:1.6, so in theory I need an expansion joint, from what I understand right down the middle of the long side as this is the most likely area to crack (please see attached swanky paint drawing) which happens to be in the middle of the door opening unfortunately. i have read elsewhere movement joints are only necessary when thew bay is over 10M x 10M.

Do I need this joint, and if so what type? If a joint is necessary, can i move it to the left a bout 800mm to avoid having it in the middle of the door?

You can. I'm not convinced on this size floor with no underfloor heating youd needs joint though.... it's very close to what I'd say should be maximum if heated but unheated not convinced.

Cheers Ajax, so if you were looking at a floor like this, you would not use an expansion joint? do the 1.5mm tile spacers allow enough space between the tiles?
