Bicycle disc breaks

Hi all, I have a breaking problem on my bike. It’s a 8 year old carrera kracken from Halfords, for some reason im not getting the same breaking power anymore, I used to be able to slam on the front breaks and the whole rear end would lift but not getting anywhere near that anymore. I have changed the pads but still no joy, I then tried roughing up the disk slightly with some light sand paper still no joy, I have also tried cleaning the breaks with IPA(alcohol cleaner) still no joy, I know some of you guys are in to your bikes so any help is much appreciated

A Halfords bike. Id take it to Halfords and let them try to fix it. Even if it costs £20 for a service or whatever. They sell it, they can try fix it.

Alternatively you could ask them if your bike has the correct mounts for buying and fitting some new disc brakes? Its not that expensive to get something halfway decent IF you can attach it to the bike.

I would as above look into replacing the brakes, if your still happy with the bike why not spend a little and upgrade the brakes.
Some great deals around on Avid juicy brakes and would probably fit on nicely!
Mind you if you ride that bike regular why not buy again, halfords still sell the krakens and even nicer boardmans !!!
Talk to a bike shop or halfords if you want or buy new brakes online and fit them yourself.
Another possible problem is that your brakes may need bled, is the levers slack?
Then again at 8 years old you prob have no hydraulic brakes?
If cable brakes then the cables may be knackered.
Renew seems like way forward.

Try running the bike up and down with the brakes just on so you feel the pads are rubbing on the disc, this will heat up the new pads and break them in, do one brake at a time, carry a water bottle with you and once the pads have heated up squirt some water over the disc. Read this tip in MBR mag years ago and it worked for me. It is suppoed to brake the pad down and leave a tracy of the pad on the disc giving better bite. Hope that makes sense.
Meant to ask are they cable or hydraulic, as you may need new cables or if hydraulic they may need new fluid.
