When back skimming 650 x 450 porcelain floor tiles used with levelling clips, do I use the notched side or smooth side of the trowel? If the smooth part how thick does it need to be?

You want to cover the back of the tile with the smooth side of your trowel. The adhesive will seal in any dust you may have on the tile. It will also cover all the indents on the back of the tile and it will give you an extra 1mm (or more) adhesive to form a good bond with the adhesive on the floor.
