limestone
Limestone is a common type of carbonate sedimentary rock. It is composed mostly of the minerals calcite and aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Limestone forms when these minerals precipitate out of water containing dissolved calcium. This can take place through both biological and nonbiological processes, though biological processes have likely been more important for the last 540 million years. Limestone often contains fossils, and these provide scientists with information on ancient environments and on the evolution of life.About 20% to 25% of sedimentary rock is carbonate rock, and most of this is limestone. The remaining carbonate rock is mostly dolomite, a closely related rock, which contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2. Magnesian limestone is an obsolete and poorly-defined term used variously for dolomite, for limestone containing significant dolomite (dolomitic limestone), or for any other limestone containing a significant percentage of magnesium. Most limestone was formed in shallow marine environments, such as continental shelves or platforms, though smaller amounts were formed in many other environments. Much dolomite is secondary dolomite, formed by chemical alteration of limestone. Limestone is exposed over large regions of the Earth's surface, and because limestone is slightly soluble in rainwater, these exposures often are eroded to become karst landscapes. Most cave systems are found in limestone bedrock.
Limestone has numerous uses: as a building material, an essential component of concrete (Portland cement), as aggregate for the base of roads, as white pigment or filler in products such as toothpaste or paints, as a chemical feedstock for the production of lime, as a soil conditioner, and as a popular decorative addition to rock gardens. Limestone formations contain about 30% of the world's petroleum reservoirs.
Hello We had limestone tiles installed and,at the time, the tiler said he had run out but not to worry he had some spare in his van. The two tiles he put in are noticeably different (darker) than the rest. Last week we had a damp mat on the tiles next to it and when we moved the mat the tiles...

Does this dijon limestone look strange?

I’ve been doing a lot of research on how to lay black limestone but it’s pretty up in the air. Should I fully seal all six sides prior to laying the stone or simply brush a sbr mix onto the back of the slabs. Obviously I want to reduce the amount of stains rising through the stone. Also if I was...
Hi all,

Hi, I did a limestone floor for a customer which I washed and sealed, then grouted 24 hours later. A week later I went back to apply another coat of sealer. The floor was mostly clean but had a few dried up droplets of grout water. I made the mistake of using an acid cleaner to wash the tiles...
We had limestone pavers installed by our pool builder.
Would really appreciate some feedback on this as the builder is blaming us for it, even though we have had nothing to do with the process.
They looked fantastic when we bought them and when they were installed. However, as the photos show...
I have a patio tiled with tumbled grey limestone. Every year I clean it and seal with LTP stone oil, using a small brush to work the oil into the stone and wipe any excess off. This year had it pressure washed which was faster but it looks paler to me. The normal colour is a charcoal grey and...

Hi there,
This is my first post.
I've just finished laying approx 80m2 of Tudor white limestone with 6mm gaps. No major drama, but it has taken 6 months over evenings and weekends. I'm having a few issues with grouting. We want the grout to be flat, level with the face of the tile.
I some...

Hi all, I'm raplacing my vinyl kitchen floor with natural limestone tiles.
Having pulled up the old floor, I have discovered the concrete underneath is damp.
It is drying out pretty quick, in one day it's mostly gone, but I'm wondering if this is an issue?
Do I need to have the floor DPM...
