I have a fireplace that is covered with travertine which my wife is not a fan of, she would like to replace it with a stone veneer. Is it possible to lay the stone on top of the travertine? My concern is that the stone will not adhere to the travertine because it's smooth. What would you recommend I do? Lay the stone over the travertine? Roughen up the travertine so that stone will hopefully adhere better? Install a backer board over the travertine and lay the stone on to of the backer board? Remove the travertine, install backer board and lay the stone on that?

Thank you in advance for any help and suggestions.

To be sure of no problems just break out travertine and screed with a 4 to 1 sand cement screed to required height for the new fire hearth. Stick the stone with an adhesive that's compatible to the stone you are using
