O
This is a project I undertook with the help of @AliGage at the start of 2015,
the property situated actually on the bank of the River Thames, had suffered a major flood 12 months eaier and we were tasked with the re Instatement of their finished floor covering.
After the existing Parquay flooring had been removed I requested a site meeting with Lee Rowland from Schluter and Martin Bell from Ardex.
Reason for this was that the client and loss adjusters wanted us to reinstate the floor in such a way that if the property was flooded again that our covering would offer some protection to the substrate below.
The first problem encountered was that there was a layer of Magnesite below the Parquay, so that had to be removed. (Horrible nasty stuff that has been banned now!) Magnesite: Key facts you ought to know
Once that was removed it became evident that the slab had been damaged also.
It was agreed by all that the floor was not repairable in this condition.
After subsequent visits from engineers and contractors and loss adjustors, the following works were undertaken.
Firstly the slab was repaired locally, then 3 layers of synthaproof were added followed by a new 100mm screed.
This would then be primed covered with Ditra Matting, correctly sealed and jointed and taken up the wall 100mm where possibly to form a waterproof layer and skirting detail.
Theory being in the event of another major flood the shbstrate would be protected by a waterproof layer.
Then tiled with the addition of a skirting tile and all transitions sealed and siliconed.
The Ditra was layer to a spec from Schluter including the use of their lovely super sticky adhesives Kerdi-Coll and Kerdi-Fix!
The whole floor was laid to falls toward an opening in the utility floor, where a submersible pump was fitted with an automatic cut in switch, for use in the event of a flood!
It was a great project to work on with AliGage, and I think it turned out pretty well all things considered, and the clients Peter and Elizabeth were two amazing characters!
