Could be latex that was mixed with to much water which produced a surface laitance which is why the tiles came up leaving very little adhesive on the substrate..

Not sure if gypsum screed was around 17 years ago?
Early 90's was first anhydrite screeds. Early eighties was first general gypsum screeds e.g hemihydrate.
core bit a piece out if there's sand in it its sand and cement if its gypsum based it will have a smooth look and be whiter in colour
Are you saying gypsum screeds don't have sand in???

i dip in now and then at the moment as I moved house and am busy renovating it at present. no problems with recieving texts for work though. If i can help you avoid an issue will.
