I get your point but there'd be no obligation on behalf of the employer to actually give a pay rise.

That was on a good week of 8 days before the Julian calander was introduced by Ceasar.
I remember Hadrian coming over to our town and building a bloody wall across the country to keep out the heathens in the north - sounds familiar.
He kept the wages so low we had to join a theatre company that showed us how to ask for a pay rise. Unfortunately it all ended in tears and we all had to work on the ships. Fortunately Arthur and Maggie came along and closed all the industry and I took up tiling - never looked back - money falling out of every pouch, stotties on the table every night and friends all over Europe telling me not to use exclamation marks.
