Tiling Standards: British Standards in Wall and Floor Tiling

The tiling standards in the UK is the British Standard BS 5385 Wall and Floor Tiling and is available directly from BSI Group. They’re really really expensive. The Tile Association provide them as part of their annual subscription. But that’s £195 + VAT per year. So still not cheap if you’re only using it to gain access to the tiling standards.

Our members are pretty savvy, they found out that most local government libraries supply them to their members free of charge, so we had a chat with them to see how it’s done.

There are a couple of rules doing it this way. You’re not allowed to make copies, in whole or in part. But you can make as many notes as you want. Usually you’re only doing it to find out how to do a specific thing. So it’s usually okay just to make some notes for your own keeping.

The brilliant thing is, with some libraries, you can register online, and view the tiling standards online, for free. Here’s how:-

Step 1

Join Newcastle Library Here – Although this is for Newcastle Library, you can actually register no matter where you are in the UK.

You’ll need to wait for your PIN to access BSOL (British Standards Online).

Step 2

Once you have your PIN, login to your library account.

Info will be in your email, or if it has come via the post, in the letter. You will need to be logged in BEFORE clicking this next link (or else it pushes you to the login page and you will have to come back here to click the link again anyway).

Step 3

Click the following link (again, login first to Newscastle Library account).

So you’re logging into a couple of things using your one PIN. Long-winded, but once you’re in, bookmark it, and you’ll get to it straight away every time, and always free!
