Best advise is don't do it ;)

What tile are you fixing?
Has the backs and sides of the boards been sealed?

Don't do it.
Over board the ply with suitable backer board.
Tank if in wet area
Use appropriate https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ and grout

I've taken your advice and covered it with hardi backer board, the trouble I have now is with the tiles. They are small brick tiles. And using a 6mm trowel the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ doesn't seem to be getting enough on the backs of the tiles. The outer edge is getting caught by the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ but the middle isn't. Should I use a 10mm trowel or dot and dab the tiles on the wall

Have the tiles got concave back? .... I did some brick tiles last year that were like this. Only option is to back fill the tiles. If you use a bigger notched trowel the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ will start to come through the joints and that will leave you with more cleaning to do and may take you longer.

Yes they have a slight indent. Yes I have applied the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ to the back now instead and some on the wall
