I hope that's not plywood lining on the floor, especially if it's going to be tiled over. If so it no longer conforms to British Standards for floor tiling. It would need to be a backer board to comply nowadays.

Were they proper cement encaustics?

Yes 16mm thick, sealed twice before handling.

These modern encaustics are 100% better then the rubbish that used to come out of Fired Earths boxes 25 years ago!
Individually spaced/protected and uniform size and thickness.
Plumbers were on them next morning to fit the products (reclaimed) and the shower was the original mess! I’am just a Tiler, will do anything for money.
