Please can somebody share their knowledge and let me know if I’m on the right track, i.e do you think the steps I am about to undertake are going to prolong the life expectancy of my first attempt to tiling a floor (I am just a mere DIYer and not professional)?
The situation is that I’m trying to save my sister some dosh and attempt to sort out her 2 meter squared downstairs toilet which had until a day ago a partially rotten 18mm plywood subfloor (damaged tiles on top) as water had soaked straight through due to leaking toilet waste.
The first step is the only step I have so far completed (besides splitting my finger open with my new adhesive scraper!):
1) Removed pre-existing 18mm plywood floor boards and left joists to dry. Joists are now dry and in good condition.
2) Lay 18mm P5 chipboard (2 boards pushed together laying across the middle of the joists). These are screwed down with NO glue on the joists and NO glue on the actual T&G. In other words, only screws are holding the boards down.
3) 6mm Aquapanel (AP) glued down with Mapei Keraquick rapid set flexible tile adhesive (MFA) (NO primer used at this stage as boards are moisture resistant so didn’t think this was necessary?) AP has a 3-4mm gap between the joints filled in with MFA and also screwed down with AP 25mm non-rust screws. AP jointing tape then laid over the joints using MFA.
4) Wickes 9mm ceramic tiles laid directly over the AP using the same MFA and NO primer on AP beforehand.
