The tiles are not laid square to the units but that could be because the tiles were square to something else and the walls are not square to each other - including the stairs.

As for the broken tiles - it doesn't look like they are solid bed fixed so this will make them sound hollow and possibly lead to them breaking.

Were the units fitted after the tile?

One more point - the tiles look like they are a cheap ceramic tile and probably not best suited for a high traffic area like you have.

He has started at a wall which isn't straight(old house) but I would have rather had them straight to the main focal point of the kitchen and off at the wall, as you wouldn't notice due to the fridge going there. The tiles down previously were straight to the units.

The kitchen units were in before the tiles.

What do you mean by solid bed sorry? It's a concrete floor. I admit the tiles are ceramic and not the most expensive.

Can you take up a tile. The broken one or an easy one that you can get up to see how they have been fixed. Solid bed basically means a solid uniform thickness of tile https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/. When hollow sometimes they have been spot fixed this means blobs of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/

The one that broke, when lifted, wasn't dot and dabbed, but the end that broke hadn't made contact with the https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ (still lined pattern of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ on floor). So either uneven https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ or floor was out I guess . He said that once grouted the grout will fill the gaps underneath and they won't break ... is this correct?

The fact they sound hollow and one has broken would suggest they haven't been fixed correctly. As for tiles not lining up with certain things this is a conversation your tiler should of had with you , failing that you should of raised it with him as to what dominant feature you think the tiles should line up with , dont take anything for granted , heard recently from a very good source and not hearsay of a man who went on holiday expecting a wet room when he came home to find he had a bath installed.

It is a poor tile job and the tiles are not fixed sufficiently. My guess is that the floor tiles will continue to break if the rest of it is laid the same way.

You can see from the back of the tile how little https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ coverage there is. You should be looking for 100% coverage, especially with the quality of Johnsons tiles. Any others that sound hollow are likely to break as well.

Looks like a poor job... from the picture of the removed tile it looks like the old tiles were removed and the old https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ has just had the high points removed....I would have used levelling compound be fore tile to get a better floor.
