thickness

In the field of industrial ultrasonic testing, ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is a method of performing non-destructive measurement (gauging) of the local thickness of a solid element (typically made of metal, if using ultrasound testing for industrial purposes) based on the time taken by the ultrasound wave to return to the surface. This type of measurement is typically performed with an ultrasonic thickness gauge.
Ultrasonic waves have been observed to travel through metals at a constant speed characteristic to a given alloy with minor variations due to other factors like temperature. Thus, given this information, called celerity, one can calculate the length of the path traversed by the wave using this formula:

l

m

=
c
t

/

2

{\displaystyle l_{m}=ct/2}

where

l

m

{\displaystyle l_{m}}
is the thickness of the sample

c

{\displaystyle c}
is the velocity of sound in the given sample

t

{\displaystyle t}
is the traverse time
The formula features division by two because usually the instrumentation emits and records the ultrasound wave on the same side of the sample using the fact that it is reflected on the boundary of the element. Thus, the time corresponds to traversing the sample twice.
The wave is usually emitted by a piezoelectric cell or EMAT sensor that is built into the measurement sensor head and the same sensor is used to record the reflected wave. The sound wave has a spherical pattern of propagation and will undergo different phenomena like multipath reflection or diffraction. The measurement does not need to be affected by these since the first recorded return will normally be the head of the emitted wave traveling at the shortest distance which is equivalent to the thickness of the sample. All other returns can be discarded or might be processed using more complicated strategies.

    Can you help solve conflicting advice re adhesive depth?

    I've got an AKW Tuff form shower tray with a waste that is 10mm above the tray when fully screwed in. The Tiler laid my 5mm hex mosaic tiles on a 2mm bed, so obvs wasn't going to drain. I took them back up and spoke to AKW, who recommended I put down a 3mm bed adhesive, let it go off and then...

    Mapeker Rapid set bed thickness

    Evening, I've got some 50mm cement faced UFH insulation to stick down and was going to use Mapeker rapid set as I've got a few bags but have noticed that the max bed depth is 5mm in some areas I need to build it up a little where the floor isn't level would only be a couple mm more, would this...

    Adhesive bed thickness?

    On a liquid screed (which is flat) what depth adhesive bed can/should I use? I'm trying to establish how much adhesive I need to buy and just for clarity, I mean the actual finish bed depth not the trowel size to use. They're limestone tiles 15mm thick. Many thanks!

    Grout thickness for normal (not rectified) tiles

    Hi all. I hope you're well. I am going to be installing some 300 x 600 on walls and 600 x 600 on floor. Now I believe these are not rectified. Do you take a few tiles from different packs to see the variation in sizes or do you put a 3mm spacer in. I didn't even know there were precise cut...

    Thickness of grout line query

    Fired Earth recommend using a 3mm grout thickness on their 200x100mm tiles when fixed onto plaster, to allow for movement. My tiler has gone ahead and used 2mm spacers, he says he always does this for walls. Could i have a problem. British Standards say a minimum of 2mm.

    Quarry tile bed thickness.

    I am going to have to do remedial work to a quarry tiled floor. There is a pronounced dip in the floor that the tiler was supposed to have prepped but did not do so. I am going to take the tiles up in the area, and fill in the dip with floor levelling compound. The question i have is, if i use a...

    Adhesive Thickness

    I'm about to tile a number of walls and floors. I've done a little tiling before but only with smaller tiles so I'd like to check I'm getting the adhesive thickness right for larger tiles; 600x300 porcelain on a wall (one is part of a shower), is an 8mm towel to leave a 4mm thickness of adhesive...

    Adhesive Thickness

    Looking for a bit of help. I am tiling with 900mm x 150mm porcelain floor tiles with a thickness of 9 mm. They will be tiled on top of solid ply sheet that has been tanked. Most advice given on floor tile adhesive thickness seems to be based on tiles that are 600 x 300 or 300 x 300. Due to the...

    Setting Out Kitchen Tiles: grout thickness for non-matching sizes

    It's been a while since my last tiling job. We finished a kitchen renovation some time ago and have been trying to decide since what to use for the splashback. We've settled on tiling (which we had in the pre-renovation kitchen). That decision should come as no surprise to you good folks! (why...

    Adhesive type recomendation and thickness for 20mm porcelain outside

    I need some advice on which adhesive to use and the thickness of adhesive bed required. I want to lay 400 x 600 20mm porcelain tiles onto some concrete steps I have made outside. I read somewhere that a 20mm bed is required but that sound excessive. I have 30 of these tiles to lay. Thanks in advance

    Adhesive thickness

    Just picked up a kitchen floor with 800mm square polished porcelain. What thickness of ribs would you advise for the floor AND for the back of the tile. Previously laid a lot of 600mm porcelain but this is my first job with a bigger tile. Ill be using a levelling system with it.
