I'm having some tiles taken up and redone as they were previously fixed incorrectly (mainly lack of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ coverage). The contractors are asking to return on two separate days first to take up the tiles and prime the screed, and the second day to fix the the tiles.

My question is, should they be priming the floor on the second day given that taking up the tiles on the first day is likely to release a lot of dust into the atmosphere that will likely settle on top of the primed floor before they fix the tiles the next day?

I can only assume they want to prime the day before so that they do not need to wait around for an hour or so on the second day whilst the primer dries.

I will often do the same and prime at the end of the day with tile on the second day. Vacuum thoroughly before priming and all is good.

Also depends on the substrate, type of primer being used and how strong a mix/ coats are applied

this is good to hear. I guess I'll need to insist they make sure to sweep and hoover over the primed areas prior to fixing the tiles and that should be sufficient?

I've been told the substrate is 70mm fibre reinforced, sand and cement screed. They've told me they'll be using BAL Bond SBR primer which looks appropriate.

To be honest the amount of residual dust in the air will be minimal but a quick vacuum never hurts. Mixing bags of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ in the vicinity will often create more dust than the prep work! A bit of dust is often inevitable.....

And its called 'man glitter' in our trade :D

Something isn’t right if you’re having to go online to check that a ‘professional’ is doing the job right.

I guess it’s the way it is in this country where you can go out and buy a tub of ready mixed and a trowel and then register yourself as a business and start trading.

Everyone deserves a second chance.

Except cowboy tilers.

they were adamant nothing was wrong with them and still haven't formally admitted it either, but at least they have agreed to start replacing tiles in high traffic areas.

To be honest since I haven't paid for the tile or the retention fee, I will make them redo the whole floor before they see any money.

Do you have any pics of the tiles that came up etc. You said they were incorrectly fixed. In what way was the coverage not good? How we’re they fixed.

I had a previous post on the matter here. There were quite a few issues that came up but the main one was lack of https://www.tilersforums.com/forums/tile-adhesive/ coverage. Some of the tiles that were taken up had barely 30% coverage.
