Evening all, I’ve recently looked at a job where there are wooden floor boards in an entrance hall that lead into a kitchen that has a concrete floor. Customer wants both kitchen and entrance hall tiled.

I’m going to cement board the hall way to reinforce the floor before tiling. Would I need to use a decoupling membrane at all?

Thanks in advance, Stu.

Decoupling membrane is for lateral movement not for deflection.
Make sure you put a expansion joint where floor boards meet concrete

What tiles are you putting down?
How old is the concrete floor is there any ufh or cracks

The floor looks pretty good and there is no UFH. I’ve been round to see the customer this evening as the existing floor has now been removed. It’s a bit of a tricky one as only part of the entrance hall is floor boards and the concrete floor is exactly the same height as the wooden section. If I over board I will be raising the height of the floor so I’m a bit unsure what to advise?

You want to put cement boards in hall and then either rescreed kitchen or use a decoupling membrane to bring up level or kitchen to same level. This might cause a knock effect to other room threasholds off kitchen etc?

What tiles are to be laid? If they’re stone then you’ll need to uncouple as well as have expansion, if not board the hall and self levell the kitchen up to meet heights and install a soft expansion directly over the joint between the two substrates.
