Excellent Tanking Product!

The kit comprises of :-

- Gloves
- Tanking coating (2.5kg)
- 10M of tape
- 2 x Internal corner pieces.

The system works really well and IMHO one of the best paint on membranes on the market. Arguably the best I have used.

No primer is required, you simply paint on straight out of the tub.

The tape is provided for joints and abutments and is bedded onto the paste and then painted over.

The tape is really good as it’s flexible, other tapes are less flexible so creasing can occur. This doesn’t happen with the Tilemaster tape. It flexes round walls nicely whether they are out of true or if the installer hasn’t got things quite right.

The paste sticks really well and there appears to be a very fine grit in the paste which leaves a key to the wall once dry. There is no edge peeling like other brands. This is a true one coat system. The paste is really thick.

One thing that must be noted is that if you just slap the paste on in a carefree manner then once the coat is dry you might see a few lighter areas where the substrate is shining through. These areas just need a touch up.

Altogether Tilemaster have done a really good job. Coverage is far better than the seemingly small amount of paste suggests.

I’ve used the kit a dozen or so times now.

How does it alter the weight limits for tiles on the various background substrates?
If there is no primer for say plaster, what stops it peeling off?
I appreciate the ease of this product as described I just wonder how effective the larger format tiles adhere.

I’ve used it many times, the 2 coat and the new one coat, and I wasn’t sure that the one coat was sufficient as you could see through it in places, even when applied evenly by roller. It’s easy to use tho. I always prime

Hi John, I’ve no idea on the weight limits of this particular tanking kit I’m afraid. I had a quick look but couldn’t see any information.

I’ve no idea how it sticks to plaster but I can tell you that it stick a hell of a lot better than the Mapei tanking does. I’ve used this kit on both primed and in-primed walls. It’s as solid as a rock. Real quality stuck. Really stick your fingers too. Both Mapei and the Bal WP1 peel off very easily in comparison.

As with all of these things, you have to be sensible. You wouldn't use it on certain applications. Sometimes if the tiles are extremely heavy, I’d favour a cement board so that the tile and substrate is monolithic. Especially if it’s a sloped ceiling you’re tile.

Localtiler- you’re right, there is sometimes the odd bit that hasn’t covered. I find a brush works better than a roller to stop this.

They tend to vary with their limits. Ardex WPC’s weight limit is the same as the background’s, probably similar to TM’s by the sounds of it (I’ve never used it).
Lesser systems no doubt will have limitations. All these systems depend though on their application being of the minimum applied thickness in their bond and water permeability. If you don’t apply these paint on systems correctly they will still allow a certain amount of water to penetrate, you must follow the instructions correctly and even at that if you read the limitations on the technical data sheets for each you’ll see a huge difference in their capabilities.

Thanks for the comments on the Tanking Kit. The weight limits to guide you are the ones designated for the substrate you are fixing to eg. 20kg, 32kg ect. The main idea behind a one coat tanking paste was to help speed the drying times so tile can begin sooner. The old tanking paste was a three coat system, prime, paste and paste again taking up to six hours before you could tile. The new system is approximately three hours. If you are someone who prefers to prime, carry on doing so as this will not affect the bond strength of the paste. We have found in testing that applying the tanking paste with a sponge roller or a block/shed brush will give the best results. If you do get a few thinner patches, as long as there is a thin coating there it will still hold the moisture back.

I used to use a Roller with another kit I used but I found that a fence/shed brush works best with the TM Kit

I actually had a demo from one of your Reps a while ago who showed me the kit and haven’t looked back since.

From a personal level and if I could give some constructive feedback, I never use the internal corner pieces but would welcome a brush in the kit.

Great product anyway. Mapei needs to up their game with their kit as there’s no way I’m using it when I have the TM system.

Likewise,I've had an inkling some of those blue tanking kits were going to peel, when I have removed the 50mm masking tape that I use to mask off the shower tray.
Never gone back to using them.

I’m tempted to try the gaffer tape test on the TM. Judging by how well it sticks to my fingers and other things I’ve inadvertantly ‘glued’ I’d imagine the paper face of the plasterboard would come off.

A plaster and gaffer tape test would also be good.

I wonder what tests they do at Tilemaster HQ?

I’m getting quite sad and Anal about all of this now.

Not used the tm paste but some of the others are terrible. Ardex wpc is the best I've used and isomat sl17 and the dukka one are good for single part. I'll have to give the tm one a blast
