Ultimately it depends on what you're doing with them. In general:-

Hard rubber or aluminium backer for flat surfaces or convex surfaces/edges.

The only reason to have a flexible or semi flexible backer is if you need the pads to form to a concave shape or curve.

Sponge (soft) type backers are more appropriate for paper discs, it gives them a little suspension and reduces the chance of tearing.

Yeah, had to purchase a bag of their own flexi rapid as had no TM Ultimate left, nearly cried!
