Hi,

I have a 7 Metre Ground Floor Hallway which is currently plain floorboards and I have just ordered some 300 x 600 slate effect porcelain 9mm tiles.

I am aware of the backer board vs ply argument and that it depends on who you ask!

My question is to be able to keep the floor low I would like to remove the floorboards and put either ply or backer boards directly onto the joists and tile directly onto them, does anyone have any experience or advice in this?

Many Thanks!

If the floor boards are solid and in sound condition why not just overboard with 6mm Hardie, Z bars can be used in doorways, and height shouldn't be an issue..

Backer boards are used as an overlay only. However there are 20mm ish structural cement boards that could be used. Armoroc is one example.

If you feel the need to rip it all up rather than overboard it with Hardie, providing your joists are at no more than 300mm centres you could lay 18-22mm ply and tile direct, but even then most people on here would still want the piece of mind of a cement board overlay, because these days, timber surfaces are risky.

Or, look up “Hardiplank”

Remove floorboards, noggin if necessary. Fix hardiplank direct to joists. Tile.
