Dan is kinda right , again we`ll use the term "mud" very looslly in conversation . Like I`ll say " It took me so ling to prep out the floor ,I didn`t start slinging mud till 11 o clock!! "

But Dave is realy right, cause the word mud or mudding is a mixture of portland cement & sand to create/screed a flat/level base in which to set your tile or stone on.

Floor mud is called "Deck Mud" usually 4 or 5 to 1 mix Or add 1 part lime to the mix & you have what we call "Fat Mud" for walls or ceilings usually over a wire mesh of some sort ,some times done in two parts , scratch coat then come back later & do final coat/screed.

White sand & blue water !!!

Louis.

over here your mud..or cement/sand mix is called render, this is usually used as scratch coat on interior walls for smoother gypsum plaster to finish, and outside walls ,with various types of finish..textures and strengths....Gaz
