(and to think...you guys taught us this......and now you use the metric system....)

I use durock brand cement board..... 1/4 and 1/2 inch.


I cut cement board with an angle grinder with a 4 inch dry diamond blade.....I also makes some tile cuts with this as well.....circle for commode flange.......small notches....etc..

I nearly bought the dewalt wet saw last november. but htere was a delay on the delivery so i bought this instead...... 1.5hp Sliding Tile Cutter and Stand (DW200N) - available to buy online from rutlands.co.uk ...

as regarding dry cutters i have rubi ts 40...ts 60.....and tx700n....

David...thats an interesting saw. Is it heavy?

I like the dewalt because it is only 75lbs for the main piece....pretty east to move around and set up.

Having a helper makes me more likely to use a wet saw.....if my rubi gives me any trouble snapping the tile. So many people doing "stone looking rough tiles" that do not snap well....as well as Porcelain tiles.....1/2 the tile I do now is porcelain.

the rubi dw200n weighs 40kg ..in your weights that is 88lb... but easy to manouvre with its wheels and assembly is ok with the attached folding leg system......and will cut a tile length 720mm ( 29inch tile) and using the plunge and cut it will cut a tile 840mm long ( 34 inch tile)......

I could imagine a day of leaning out setting 34 inch tiles. I bet my shoulders would be sore.




I see some 20"x20" tiles on occasion, but most are 12-13 inch square. Sometimes patterns. Lots on a 45 degree angle.

I am working on a 400 square foot kitchen, laundry, and bath right now. Added 1/4 cement board over existing vinyl flooring and subfloor. total of 1 1/4 thickness
makes a nice solid floor to set tile on. I NEVER set tile over plywood or wood subfloor...
always use a cement board thinsetted and nailed down with 1 1/4" galvanized roofing nails.


I see you guys use these "tilers sponges" they look square to me.....square edges....I would hate those.....they would dig grout out.

I use these sponges with rounded over edges.

Like these: Grout Cleaning, Grout Removal, Professional Grout Cleaning machines, Grouting Machine

Then I cut them in half.


Also.....bucket trowel? and these tubs you use for mixing mortar?

We use 5 gallon buckets.......and "margin trowels"

Please tell me you guys hand mix grout and do not machine mix it......

I have been using the Rubi TS 50 and have just encountered problems cutting 600mm porcelain (you just cant cut them!). Being a little wet behind the ears, would Rubi ts60 be perfick?

i cut the sponges in half aswell.... and yes i hand mix grout... but when washing floors etc . dave . alot of tile fixers over here use wash boy kits... as seen here..Tilers Washboy - Wall Tiling Tools - Tiling Tools, wall,

these more than half the time it takes to wash a floor off....

Some porcelains are just unsnappable.

If a wetsaw (That's yank for wet cutter), is not available, the use an angle grinder....

I'd love a big tile cutter like either of those! Thing is i've only just set up and don't really think i need it to cut 10x8 ceramics in a bathroom that the cutter won't even fit in!

I'll stick to my TS50+ and my £30 plasplugs for now! lol

When you get large floors to do in stone gaz you will wish you had one coz they are a god send believe me....lol

I have used a grouting system before.......but when I do use them....I find I don't pay attention as much to each grout joint.....I may have a go at one again someday....
(That last part almost sounded English huh?) You guys are rubbing off on me.

So....explain the "Bucket trowel"....is this just a bigger margin trowel? Do you guys scoop mortar out of the gigantic tile tub things?

the term bucket trowel speaks for itself.... cleaning out buckets or can be used for loading your trowel with adhesive ...etc...

A cheap £50 wet cutter will cut most tiles(,use it dry for slate spash water now and again). for porcelains try a rubi star£30 does most but not all.

I use a target tilematic 10 inch to do all my cutting, but I have a cheaper King wetsaw as a backup and a Rubi TS40 to snap.

I use a Makita 4" and 7" angle grinder to do dry cuts and use a variety of diamond grinding wheels to do various prep work to concrete.
I don't like breathing dust so I have rigged up my Makita to work with water.

I use a small Makita 9141 rechargeable to do cuts for soft wall tiles with a plastic tub to catch the water.

For cutting CBU's I score and snap and then use a stucco rasp to finish the edges so they are smooth and proper. (I never use a grinder to cut them as it makes a huge dust cloud of carcinogenic dust)

I also use a variety of die-grinders (large industrial makita and small dremel tool) with diamond tool ends to do various profiling and detailing.

I like my flex wet angle grinder for cutting holes and profiling and polishing.
