hey lads , have a look in the Sun newspaper, last year they wanted plasterers to go over and work on stadiums and residentials for the winter olympics. They only wanted 2 years experience and guaranteed 2 year working visa. dont know how legit it was but worth a shout.
hello all,
I just wanted to give you some tips on how to find jobs in our beautiful Canada.
Try----Tiling jobs and careers in Skilled Labor - Yahoo! HotJobs
or----Construction Recruitment | Civil Engineering Recruitment | Agency | Construction Jobs | International | Canada
Since I am not sure where you all are from, those may be of some use.
need any information on.....flooring

You can send me a PM and let me know a bit about your experience and such as I may have a project by xmas which will require me to look abroad for labor.
It is hard to find good people in Alberta.
Lots of substandard people but quality people are proving difficult to find.

is it easier to move there if you have family that has citizenship?
my brother is in the us army.

Hi Tom,
I don't know if it is too late for you, but here is my observation on this topic: you would be best off contacting a large organization such as one of the unions. The immigration laws here are so convoluted and require so much involvement with an attorney that I think it's only the large organizations and corporations that can afford the time and money to get through the red tape and get someone in here legally. I tried about 5-6 years ago to sponsor someone and was confounded with all the BS that was involved. The attorneys certainly are the winners with all of this.
For example, I could use another tile setter tomorrow, but it would take a year or more and thousands of dollars to get someone like yourself in here legally.
Union membership is down a lot here in the US, and from what I read I see that they have broadened their recruitment efforts to include immigrants and others that they traditionally ignored.
Good luck!

In Canada it is good to avoid having anything to do with the unions as a tilesetter.
Personally, I have nothing to do with them and most stores are not interested in hiring union tilesetters due to the extreme costs.
(Which don't all go to the tilesetter)
Better to work with a good network and spend the time (not money) developing that.
In Alberta those relationships are worth more than any paper or any union.

Hi Alberta Stone,
I agree about the union observations that you have made, but here in the US I don't know which organization would have more clout and resources to assist someone with the paperwork and ready access to the immense beauracracy that is our Federal Goverment.![]()

Try the Tile Council of North America.
They have lots of useful info and like to help.
Get their book as it is really useful and get the ANSI book as well.
There are small business help offices which exist even in the US which are good resources for small trades companies which can help with understanding how to integrate into the system.
Form a limited company or incorporate as it is relatively inexpensive and helps immensely with taxation and other gov't demands.
Being licensed and bonded is also very helpful.
hi,im tiler for 23 years,im portuguese and i live in uk,ive got scool art and im multiskill person(paster, jonery, pinter etc).i been made redund in november and im keen work in diferent places new projects,if you are interesed please feel free,my email is:resi568@hotmail.com

Hi Resi,
There are a lot of Portuguese here in the Washington DC area, most are involved in the concrete and stone trades. I wouldn't know how to get you in contact with some of them (maybe you could go through your embassy), but they could sponsor you if you have the requisite skills that are needed for their business.
I do know one Portuguese concrete contractor... he did the work on my house. I could forward his phone number to you.
The immigration laws here in the US are a disaster, but sponsorship for work is definately possible. Good luck with your search.
My sister and her husband are both fluent speakers of Portuguese*. If you have specific questions that you would feel more comfortable asking in your native language, email them to me and I'll forward them to my sister and her husband.
*They lived in Lisbon for two years about 10 years ago and loved every minute of it.
