Question pipe detector

Hi all, does anyone use a pipe detector when boarding down to joists? If not what do you do to avoid pipes? if you do, how accurate are they and can anyone reccommend a decent priced one?

Simple for boarding floors.

Add thickness of floorboard + plyboard and use screws a couple of mill shorter than the floor and ply combined.

Wouldn't trust them anyway, I would just replace the nails with screws if getting the floorboards up (to have a look) is impossible or going to be a lot of hassle!
