i too like the trousers with the pockets to insert the pads i used a set of strap on ones but they cut into the back of my knees too much and easing the straps resulted in them falling down (the pads not my knees!) the dearer ones have a special material on the knees ( i cant remember the name !) but it is good i have had my 2 pairs for over a year now with no signs of wear they also have lots of pockets too !

The best knee pads i have ever had are neoprene ones made by draper! they are made of neoprene and have two fastners that go around the leg and fix useing velcro the straps are soft and dont! cut into the back of your leg they have a rubber front to them which is easy to clean, and they shape around your knee very well, unlike some with plastic fronts! they are comfy and you dont know you are wearing them..
they lasted for a couple of years too, needed a new pair but couldnt get these locally at the time and have now got gel pads now, there ok but big and bulky

I've got some cheapish Gel pads, but to be honest i never use em, as they make the backs of my knees all sweaty and annoy the hell outa me... Really should use em though, coz my knees aren't teh best.

Try Vitrex G Shock pads. Been using them for the last few years, get them for £20 in B&Q. Take a bit of getting used to with the removable plastic caps but very comfortable and wear a lot better than most other styles of kneepad.
