Default Apprentice tiler needs advice please?

    Hi all,

My name is Karl, I'm 17 and an apprentice tiler from Dublin, Ireland and I'm looking for some advice on a buying a manual cutter please?

Long story short, my boss has gone out of business recently so I have no one to turn to for advice so I am hoping someone here can help me?

Some of my family and friends have said they will give me some work, to tide me over until I can find someone else to help me finish my apprecticeship.

The problem is I have very few tools and one of the family jobs is setting 10mm thick 600 x 300 porcelain tiles.

Good news is that I have managed to save up £200 to buy a cutter to start me off, the bad news is that that has to include postage to Dublin too.

So what I am asking is can someone please recomend a cutter that can handle these large tiles in this price range please?

I have been to a few local tool shops but all their cutters are either £40 or £400 and I get the feeling that they just see dollar signs when I walk in the door. There also not very willing to talk about the differences between models with an apprentice either so it's difficult for me to learn which ones are better suited to me?

I would be very, very gratful for any advice anyone could offer, many thanks in advance. Karl

Hi Karl, you don't have enough money to buy a new cutters but you could always get one from your local tool hire shop to tide you over for that job and then start saving for your own tools.

good luck Karl, you sound like you know where you want to be. The rubi tx70 n is about 290 I think from trade tiler, any chance of asking anyone to 'sub' you. Pay them back the 'hire charge' each job perhaps.

    Hi Karl
Get yourself on e-bay and see if you can get yourself a secondhand cutter. A good quality Rubi one, don't go for the cheepy £30 cutters. Thats the root I would take good luck mate hope it all works out for you

Wow, thanks for all the fast replies lads !
Never thought of a second hand cutter as was always told to buy new when on site. I Will drop Penno a PM to see if I something can be worked out.
Bit of a chicken and egg scenario for me right now so don't think I can get much more cash together, but will see if I can sell a leg or somehting in Ebay

Cheers for the advise lads, means a lot. It's been a bit of a struggle lately and a terrible time to be an apprentice, no one is taking anyone on and I'm no where near experienced enough to go out on my own.

Karl - If its still for sale - and it fits your requirements - I'll pay the postage for you!
You sort it with Penno and I'll send him a cheque - The wife says just for the postage though!

Lads, thank you so much for the offer, I'm absolutley overwhelmed.

I'm so greatful for your offer, that's such a generous and selfless thing you have done but I really couldn't take you up on it.

You don't even know me but you are willing to put your hand in your pocket to help me out, that's incredible.

You are both outstanding people and a credit to the profession and indeed this forum, everyone should be very proud of you.

I'll find the extra money myself, but I couldn't accept your kind offer.

I came looking for advice but it's clear I have found so much more than that.

    Thanks lads.

Karl - You cannot be 17!

By the time we get a postage cost it may be about 50p each with other forum members chipping in.
As far as not knowing you I've got all your details!

The cutter has to serve your requirements for this job and the future and at £200-00 its a good deal.

Postage is covered and I can tell its a good investment.

    Professional Tiling Tools

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page there's a Genesis 600mm cutter. I have one, and it's performed like a dream. Cutting Porcelain requires a certain technique, but once you've mastered it, it's a piece of cake.

The technique (not sure if it's the same for all dry cutters) is a bit like the 'one inch power punch' lol! Start with your fingers lightly resting on the handle (after scoring the tile obviously), then snap your wrist, so the heel of your hand hits the handle. Job done!

The good news is there's no VAT to Dublin Ireland, so you only pay the Before VAT price.

Thanks for the suggestions lads, have looked into all of them now, just waiting on shipping prices. I was told there is vat on cutters sent to Ireland as Ireland is in European Union. The good news is it is charged at UK rates not Irish rates which are 21.5%.

It's a bit ironic now as I may be able to afford a better cutter as I was just asked to do a decking for a friend next weekend. If all workls out as planned, I'll have an extra £200 to spend on a cutter.
Haven't done a decking before but have seen some lads do it onsite. So looks like a bit of studying for me all next week.
