Did you try to teach him the "breaking from the wrist" technique, as opposed to the "breaking with force of the grip" technique? A good excersise for him would be if you gave him a bunch of tiles, and then marking different patterns on them, for him to snip away at. After 30-60 minutes, he'll be a pro at snips, I promise

Is this your Son Dave? If it is, make him up a nipping board so he has some shapes to cut out and get him to practice as "homework"! Cheap tiles from Wickes will do for starters. lol.

I have tried lads all sorts...i have told him it is not a case of crushing the tile to snip it but a grip and flick of the wrist type action as marcus stated....but i have laffed to no avail at his attempts , he will get there though...some peeps just use a wet saw but i like to show him the old ways as well as they come in handy if there is no power etc....and yes russ its my son....he will get there in the end...

Maybe he needs a little incentive... Put him to a little challange... Give him a bunch of cheap generic tiles, and tell him that if he can break away 3cm wide pieces undamaged (score first, then nips) from five tiles in a row, he'll get... 10 quid...

If he can make a relatively clean, round hole, with parrot nips in... Three tiles... Which follows the markings you've made (initial hole with a grinder?), he'll get 20 more...

If he can shape a tile into a clean, well formed "C", with only his nips, he'll get 30 more...

50 quids should be a rather good incentive imo, and you'll have increased his competence, understanding of tiles, and the value of him as a worker
