Default 'In House Certificates'

I'm sorry but I have to say this....

I am absolutely fed up with people phoning our centre and asking for an NVQ, after they have attended a tiling course and told the 'in house' certificate they just spent £2000 on can sail them through it.

It's not the phone calls I am bothered about, infact I welcome them as you all know.

It's the fact that the person on the other end of the phone has had that much smoke blown up their backside, that they ARGUE that they are right and that they can get their NVQ, as PROMISED by the training centre that ROBBED them!!!

I have no doubt that the training they received is of a very good standard, but if it's NON ACCREDITED, it aint worth nothing towards getting your NVQ before 3 years.

Here are the facts:

To get your NVQ you choose one of the 3 routes:

1. Do your Intermediate Construction Award, and then do your NVQ2 immediately. (26 weeks)

2. Do a NON CITY & GUILDS ACCREDITED training course, get 3 years experience and then roll for your NVQ2. (OSAT)

3. Have a minimum of 5 years experience and go for the Experienced Worker Practical Assessment (EWPA) route. This takes 2-3 days to complete.

Keep Tiling, Keep Smiling (Rant Over! )

We get the same calls and tell them exactly the same, You cannot get an NVQ in 4-6 weeks.
The methods are as Ant says above

I totally agree but the trouble is and i'm mentioning no names obviously but on certain websites they state in bold letters "GAIN YOURE NVQ'S" and ACCREDITED BY THE CITB which we all know to be nonsense. Trouble is it can be quite confusing for the individual who does not really understand this area. As always best thing to do is research and if this is carried out properly no doubt you will come across this site and while here you can drop in andread the feedback section

I wish i had this information 1.5 years ago when i took my training course because i would have thoght twice about becomming a tiler,I find it difficult to make a decent standard of living just doing domestic work so want to try my luck doing site work but now with all the red tape involved i,m cosidering packing up ,even tho i actually enjoy tiling. When i took my course people told me NVQ stood for "not very qaulified"and not worth the paper it was written on.How wrong they were.

Hi B.H.,
Sorry to hear about your position, call me naive, but I thought tiling in the domestic market was profitable if you believe the verbal coming out of the tiling schools.I have been a viewer of this site for awhile and have considered taking a course myself, but backed -off for the time being due too the housing market situ and some feedback on this site. So,come on you Pro's and give us your views on the domestic/commercial markets-is your work 50/50????

If it came to choice then domestic would win most days but saying that you do get some nice big floors in the commercial side.
Basically i tile anywhere and for anyone, i just like to keep busy. So one day i could be a few miles away in a private house tiling a bathroom and the next day 200 miles away tiling a village hall kitchen floor. The week after i could be flying to Dublin to tile a shop entrance way for a jewellery shop.
Makes life interesting .

Billy,

I am sorry to hear that you was mislead when you did your training. Don't pack it in mate - keep at it and look to getting that NVQ, with your CSCS and get on site or some decent contracts.

Why don't you consider doing your ICA and then get an NVQ? It means paying out again, but you will get your NVQ rapid style and get ahead of the game?

Hi T.C

I wrote a post a good while ago Re: Success.

Getting training is only the first step to success. Of course, good ACCREDITED training is the only way to go on that one. Nothing more to say about that.

However, marketing yourself and landing the work is something that training centres cannot teach you to do. This is down to self motivation and the desire to win. Tie this up with a good reputation and your on the way to a lucrative business.

Unfortunately, to many people blame the training centres for their 'lack of work'. Where as infact, they should be looking closer to home as to why the phone is not ringing.....

I must add here that this is not the case for all people!!

I think that theres quite a few guys on here who would disagree with you on that one pjtiler, I also think the above comment is not only ridiculous but also insulting.

I agree that speed is of the essence but quality must surely come first and foremost.
