Tiling on Floorboards
Hi Chaps. Got a bathroom floor to do tiling on floorboards. I understand it needs to be boarded out but customer doesnt want the height raising too much. Was thinking of using the hardibacker (6mm) boards but never used them before. Can anyone please give me some advice on how to fit. I believe they should be stuck and screwed at 150mm intervaks. the advice I am after is what adhesive to use to stick the boards?? Will SPF be OK?? Is it applied in dot and dab fashion when sticking these boards or combed on as you would do with a floor?? Anyadvice greatly appreciated.

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
If they`re solidly fixed couldn`t you use fastflex straight on them?

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
Was thinking of going direct with Ardex 7001 after primimg but floorbirads are quite old and quite a bit of movement in them so not too sturdy. However, it is only a small area to be tiled of approx 3 square metres in total

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
Screw the existing boards down till sound, lay 6mm ply over them nailing as you say 150 centres. Any reputable flexible. On that area no problem m8

If you prepare this way, Bal will only recommend Fastflex and wide joint grout with GT1 added. If you can get the boards stable, go directly with fastflex on such small area, but still add GT1 to your grout

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
And if you are overboarding then i would recommend using screws not nails....

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
tiles, if you use no more ply instead the stockist should have in the adhesive as well as screws. locally its, £10 per board, £5 box of screws and £8 for a tube of their adhesive.

If you deduct plywood, labour to fit plywood, screws to fix, primer for the rear and edges of the boards, travel to get the plywood & time, it works out cheaper to go directly onto secured boards with 2 part flexi. Working for Bal as you know I do, I have an obligation to people on the forums to state how incorrect procedure (in preparation and application) of our products can affect their lifetime guarantee.....I don't mean to offend....Gaz

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
Thanks guys for all your help and advice once again. Main reason for this question was how to fix the hardi-backer (ie. what adhesive and how it should be applied) as this is the way I was going to go with it. I know 2 other tilers have viewed the job and given estimates and both of them redcommended boarding it out as I did. However, I have got the job over the other 2 guys (even tho price was more) as I showed them pics of my work and the others didnt (Maybe a tip for others!!). So please, can anyone just advise me on what adhesive should be used to fix the hardibacker and how the adhesive should be applied. Cheers!!

Re: Tiling on Floorboards
Screw the backer down at 200mm centres, pilot drill the holes in board first before screwing. 10mm is required thickness for standard flexi addy, so again I recommend 2 part flex....GT1 added to grout....Gaz
